Our protagonist James Fipps is a wealthy plantation owner who sees himself as somewhat of a scholar. He believes he has an acute sense of humor, which he does not, but above all, he thinks of himself as an important figure and someone to aspire to. That all comes crashing down when a Chicago journalist suddenly shows up and asks too many questions about his character thus revealing some dark secrets.
